建筑工程系始于1914年同济医工学堂所设土木科。1952年高校院系调整后设结构系，1958年正式更名为建筑工程系。作为同济大学历史最悠久、影响最大的系之一，培养了数代中国最优秀的社会主义建设者。
建筑工程系下设教学管理中心和建筑结构研究所，分别由5个教学管理室和16个研究室（所）组成；拥有国家级科研平台土建结构预制装配化工程技术研究中心和工程结构性能演化与控制教育部重点实验室。现有教职工100余人，包括中国科学院院士1人、中国工程院院士1人、欧洲科学与艺术学院院士1人、比利时皇家科学与艺术学院外籍院士1人、国家级教学名师1人、国家级人才20人次，教授33人、副教授（高级工程师）39人、讲师（助理教授）11人，及办公室职员与试验室技术人员18人。
建筑工程系每年招收本科生100名、硕士研究生150名、博士研究生70名。践行“本科重基础重素质、硕士重专业重素养、博士重学术重志趣”的本研贯通一体化培养体系，构建了本研全覆盖、长短期结合、多层次、全方位的国际交流模式，致力于培养具有国际视野、领导意识、可持续发展理念的世界一流精英人才。
历经百余年的发展与积淀，形成了“理论联系实际”的文化底蕴。依托我国社会主义现代化建设的历史进程推动高等教育事业的改革，引领了土建类专业育人理念和模式的创新发展。面向国际学术前沿与工程实践一线，实现原始创新解决核心难题，为我国重大工程结构的设计、建造和运维提供了关键技术支撑。牵头获得国家级教学成果一等奖、二等奖6项，国家自然科学二等奖1项，国家科技进步二等奖8项。与国际知名大学和学术机构开展深度交流与务实合作，曾获得国家国际科学技术合作奖和上海市国际科学技术合作奖。
秉承百年积淀，面向国家需求，跻身国际前沿，创新发展模式。建筑工程系将始终在继承中走创新发展的道路，既注重传统工程学科的发展与完善，又强调现代科学技术的引领和带动；以基础理论和关键技术的突破应对发展过程中的挑战，引领新一代工程结构领域的创新，致力于构筑人与自然和谐共生的美丽家园。
The Department of Structural Engineering, starting from 1914, is one of the oldest departments in the history of Tongji University. It enjoys great reputation both at home and abroad for outstanding talent cultivation as well as remarkable achievements in teaching and research. The department has long been honored as “the cradle of society shaper” in China.
The Department consists of five teaching centers, 16 research groups, and two affiliated national-level research centers. At present, there are 33 professors, 39 associate professors (senior engineers), 11 lecturers (assistant professors), and 18 office staff and laboratory technicians. Among them, there are one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and one academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium.
The Department admits 100 undergraduate students, 150 master's students, and 70 PhD students annually. We have implemented an integrated training system, and established a comprehensive international exchange program. We are committed to cultivating world-class elite talents with international perspectives, leadership awareness, and sustainable development concepts.
The Department is devoted to providing key technical support for design, construction, and operation of major engineering structures in China, leading to six national teaching awards, one national natural science award, and eight national scientific and technological progress awards. We have conducted in-depth exchanges and practical cooperation with internationally renowned universities, and will continue striving for excellence in addressing critical engineering and scientific challenges, towards shaping a better home for humanity and nature.
